Van Gogh’s Starry Night
Starry Night is the ultimate impressionistic painting of our times if you consider its poularity and the regard it is given. It is one of the most reproduced paintings of all time as its prints are highly sought after. It is said that Van Gogh sold only one painting in his lifetime, and such a shame that he was unable to realize the very famous stature that he would enjoy today.
Vincent Van Gogh painted Starry Night While in an Asylum at Saint-Remy in 1889. This was a time in his life when he painted many other wonderful paintings as well.
His paintings are timeless as he paints with a style that is bold and colorful. Van Gogh’s Starry Night has many features within the painting that make the work popular. The colors are bold yet blend the painting well. The night sky is full of swirls and luminous stars which draw the viewers eye across and around the painting. The most prominent feature of the painting is the beautiful crescent moon which the eye is irresistably drawn to.
The hills and the horizon merge wonderfully with each other to present the little village in the foreground. And of course the large cyprus tree up front adds to the depth and perspective. There is a mystique about Starry Night that is obviously there but hard to explain as it speaks to us visually and which words do it no justice.
Van Gogh’s Starry Night is one of the most intriguing works ever painted. It is one which I will never get tired of looking at.
